Geri and I moved to Manhattan this summer with a running list of markets we want to hit, and building that list taught me something I didn't expect: within about twenty minutes of the Lincoln-Way towns, there's a farmers market running almost every day of the week except Monday. Most people know exactly one of them. Here's the whole week.

What Farmers Markets Are Open Today in the Southwest Suburbs?

For the 2026 season: Sundays belong to the Frankfort Country Market (9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the region's big one) with Plainfield running 11 to 3. Thursday evenings are New Lenox at the Village Commons (4 to 8 p.m.) and Shorewood's artisan market (5 to 9 p.m.). Saturdays offer Bothwell Farms in Manhattan, Lockport's brand-new Trackside market (9 to 1), and historically Mokena's French Market. Wednesdays reach the Cook side with Palos Heights. Sunday: The Frankfort Country Market (And Plainfield)

The Frankfort Country Market is the anchor of the whole regional scene: Sundays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 26 through October 25, 2026, in historic downtown Frankfort, Illinois at Oak and Kansas Streets. Nearly 70 vendors per the village, live music every week, and a genuinely wide range: produce, flowers, plants, honey, meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, baked goods, canned goods, and hot food. It's walkable, stroller-friendly, runs rain or shine, and draws thousands, so parking fills the downtown lots and streets; going early is going smart. This is the one to show out-of-town guests.

Plainfield's market runs Sundays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 7 through September 13, at the Plainfield Public Library lot, a solid second Sunday option on the western edge of the radius.

Thursday Evening: The After-Work Markets

The New Lenox Farmers Market runs Thursday evenings, 4 to 8 p.m., May 22 through September 24, at the Village Commons (101 Veterans Parkway). The evening slot is the whole point: if your schedule never sees a weekend morning, this is the market that meets you after a shift, with produce, prepared foods, and artisan goods in the town center. Shorewood's Artisan Market keeps the same idea going, Thursdays 5 to 9 p.m., June through September at Towne Center Boulevard, leaning more crafts and makers than produce.

Saturday: The Farm, the New Kid, and the Classic

Bothwell Farms in Manhattan hosts an open market on the farm itself, Saturdays from May 2 through October 31 this year, with a rotating cast of guest vendors that changes week to week. Because the lineup rotates, follow the farm's Facebook page to see any given Saturday's roster before you drive over. It's the least market-shaped market on this list, and that's the charm: you're shopping at an actual working farm.

Lockport Trackside Farmers Market is 2026's newcomer, launched this May: Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through September 19 at the Lockport Metra Station lot, 133 W. 13th Street, with produce, baked goods, coffee, and small makers. New markets live or die on their first seasons, so showing up is a vote.

Mokena's French Market has historically run Saturday mornings on Front Street at Wolf Road by the Metra station, but I could not verify a current 2026 schedule from an official source, so confirm it's running before you make the trip.

And for a Wednesday option, Palos Heights runs its market May 13 through October 14 on the Cook County side of the radius.

What Should You Actually Buy at a Farmers Market?

Honest answers, because "everything" is marketing. In August, buy what Illinois is actually harvesting: sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches, peppers, zucchini, and melons, which at peak season are fresher than the grocery store and often price-competitive because supply is everywhere. Eggs, honey, and baked goods run at a premium over the store, and you're paying for quality and provenance, which is a fine trade as long as you know you're making it. Yes, you can buy meat at a farmers market: Frankfort's vendor list includes meat, poultry, and seafood, typically frozen, pricier than the store, and traceable to the farm that raised it, so bring a cooler. And the oldest market trick still works: vendors near closing time would rather discount than repack, so the last half hour is the bargain window, at the cost of selection.

Do Farmers Markets Take Credit Cards?

Mostly yes now: the bigger markets and established vendors run card readers as standard, but small booths still have cash-preferred corners, so twenty in cash keeps the morning smooth.
