It is not just a haunted house, it is an adventure: you park in Lockport and take a shuttle bus to the site, then travel through zombie-infested woods and across the Lost Souls Cemetery to reach a multi-level 1930s mansion staffed by more than 150 actors, complete with a giant slide. New for 2026, the award-winning cast of Statesville Haunted Prison joins HellsGate at the one location. It runs select nights September 24 through November 1, 2026. Midnight Terror Haunted House (Oak Lawn). The area's other heavy hitter, and an actor-driven one. The Lemont Historical Society runs a genuinely local one-day series on October 10, 2026: a downtown ghost story walk at 12:30, Ghostly Voices at 3, and a Dead Air radio show at 6. Ghost Tour of the Southside (Tinley Park). The Tinley Park-Park District runs a guided bus-and-walk ghost tour of Chicago and the suburbs on October 16, 2026, 5:45 to 11pm, $55, departing from McCarthy Park. It sells out, and it is the strongest of the district's Halloween slate. They also run Ghostly Golf at Tinley Junction mini golf October 2 through 4, and a supernatural theater night on October 24. One correction worth carrying, because a lot of listings still have it wrong: Jack O'Lantern World is no longer at The Forge in Lemont. Its 2026 edition moved to Lake Zurich. If you see it advertised locally, that listing is stale.

How Scary Is Too Scary for Kids?

The lantern trails in Lemont are atmosphere, not fright. Siegel's zombie paintball and haunted barn are the natural step up for a tween who wants a scare but is not ready for a real haunt. The true scares, HellsGate, Midnight Terror and Heap's Haunted Corn Maze, are genuinely intense and generally not recommended under 12. When in doubt, match the attraction to your least-brave family member, not your bravest.

A Note on What Made This List

I checked every town I cover, not just the ones with obvious answers, and I only list places I could confirm are operating in 2026 from the business's or park district's own source.

Where I found real Halloween attractions: Homer Glen, Lockport, Minooka, Lemont, Tinley Park, Orland Park, and Oak Lawn.

Where I looked and came up empty this year: Manhattan, Palos Park, Palos Heights, Monee, Channahon, Manteno, Beecher, Frankfort, Mokena, and New Lenox. Some of these have excellent fall festivals, trunk-or-treats and harvest events, they just do not have a Halloween attraction in the scary sense. Channahon's Dollinger Family Farm is open September 14 through October 30 and is a genuinely good farm visit, it simply no longer runs its old haunted house.

Two I am still watching. Haunted Hollows Fest at the Will County Fairgrounds in Peotone and the Haunted Hills of Palos wagon ride in Palos Hills both ran in 2025 and are real, established events, but neither has posted 2026 dates as of late August. Both historically announce around the start of October. I will add them here when they confirm.
